BEWARE OF THE INACTIVE ONEDRIVE ACCOUNTS!!!
Starting in late January 2025, Microsoft will roll out changes to how unlicensed OneDrive accounts are managed for business and enterprise customers (Education tenants are exempt). Here’s what you need to know:
📅 Timeline: The changes will begin rolling out in January 2025 and will be completed by March 2025.
🔐 Impact:
- Any OneDrive account that has been unlicensed for 90+ days will be automatically archived and inaccessible to users.
- Admins will still have visibility into these accounts but will need to take action to restore user access.
💡 Admin Actions:
- Archive Billing: Set up billing for unlicensed accounts to keep access.
- Deletion: Remove unlicensed accounts that are no longer needed.
- Renewal: Re-license accounts to retain access.
💻 How to Prepare: Admins can view a list of unlicensed OneDrive accounts via the SharePoint admin center (Reports > OneDrive accounts). Take inventory of your accounts and plan accordingly before the policy takes effect in 2025.
💡 Heads up: Unlicensed accounts consume storage and may pose security risks. Don’t wait until the deadline!
📢 Reminder: These changes don’t apply to Education tenants at this time, but all organizations should stay informed to maintain compliance and security.
